The growing war of words between active and passive shutter glasses’ users, mainly between the Samsung and LG hailing from the same hometown, is taking a new shore opening a winning dais for the latter Korean brand. Active shutter glass technology got majority of its clicks with its starting deployment by Samsung and successively by Sony and Panasonic later, which is now under threat when LG Display declared the leading advantages of using passive shutter glasses and got the proprietary of film-type patterned retarder (FPR) technology last year.

So far the market has been ruled by active shutter glasses resulting Samsung, among all other 3D TV brands (like Sony and Panasonic) using the same technology, running the monopoly in the 3D TV market. But when Cinema 3D TV was claimed by LG offers more comfortable tri-dimensional viewing experience that is completely appropriate to endow with a full entertainment for the large families, the dominion of Samsung started declining that also resulted to reduction in customer response of Sony and Panasonic.
A global research firm California-headquartered IHS iSuppli recently conducted a study titled “Can 3D feature increase a TV’s appeal to consumers?” Based on its report, as IHS iSuppli stated, global shipments of passive 3D TV displays will overtake active 3D TV sales by 2015. It also said that though 3D eyewear is obligatory these days but this is one of the other factors that puts the consumers off purchasing a 3D TV.

IHS iSuppli also said to the media persons that with the gradual fall in the 3D TV price and rapid increase in the availability of 3D content, the sale of 3D TV will upsurge enormously this year, also thanks LG Display for penetrating the latest FPR technology in the global market. The global 3D TV market has witnessed a price fall of 9% recorded in March 2011 just within a period of one month. Whereas on the programming front, more than 80 sources consisting of live 3D broadcast and pay TV channels had been launched at the ending period of the last year and more in queue for this year. This is a positive score going straight to the 3D TV shipments of 159 million units by the end of 2015 from 23 million units in 2011.
